Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia

An interesting place at historical and artistic level with suggestive panorama over the crystal clear sea of the tuscan coast, the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia is all of this and more. It extends over 80 hectares between the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti, just 30 km from our hotel.

Some paths, organized by the park management, allows visitors to walk side by side to ancient etruscan and roman buildings where iron was processed, necropolis carved into stone and graves emerging from the ground. From the acropolis of Populonia, overlooking the sea, you can admire even what’s remaining of several roman temples that once were placed around the square.

It’s curios that the whole area of the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia and even the nearby beach are covered with small diamonds shining under the sunlight. Until 1900 the area was actually buried under iron scraps accumulated in centuries of iron processing and today there are still some residues.
