What to do in Follonica
Follonica is the ideal city for your outdoor activities, thanks to its strategic position and mild micro-climate even during the low season. It is a perfect stop for sports lovers, whatever it is. Don’t give up on your favorite activities during your holidays, there’s everything you need here, you just have to put your passion into it.
Bicycle:
For those who love simple walks in nature but also for the super-trained who cross Italy up to Sicily, near the grove you will find natural parks that offer splendid itineraries to take with family or friends. Just bring a mountain bike and find the most suitable route for you based on the degree of difficulty. Do you have to choose whether to bring your bike or your wife’s suitcase? Forget the stress and rent it when you want directly from your room. There is something for all tastes and what’s more, you can join a group of enthusiasts like you who can guide you along the most beautiful trails. Ask for information at the reception!
Kitesurfing and Windsurfing:
This area is always particularly windy so you can forget the heat of the city but above all you can dominate the water of the Gulf with a board under your feet. A few kilometers from the grove there is a surf school with kite, surfboard and windsurf rental. Since 2022 there is a new water sports school also within walking distance of us: there you can rent equipment such as windsurfing, wingfoil, SUP (stand up paddle), pedal boats, canoes and small sailboats or catamarans. Suitable for adults but also for a nice adventure with your children!
Diving
Isn’t seeing the sea enough for you? You can attend one of the dive-centres along the coast and get to know the beautiful Maremma seabed dotted with wrecks.
Sailing
Such a beautiful sea deserves to be experienced and with a few steps on foot you can reach the sailing school located right next to the grove. Laser, catamaran, optimist… to each his own sail, wind in the sails and off to fun for young and old.
Horses
The thick Mediterranean scrub that surrounds us is the most suitable setting for your horseback riding, it will be a special experience in contact with nature and away from urban chaos.
Skydiving
If the thrill is your daily bread, don’t miss the opportunity to take a leap into the void! A few km from us you have the opportunity to experience incredible sensations and go home with adrenaline still in your veins. Only for the truly brave.
Trekking:
The paths of Montioni and Cala Violina, suitable for bicycles and horses, can also be traveled on foot. Furthermore, the grove is the beginning of the seafront promenade closed to traffic that reaches the center of the city. It is a beautiful and relaxing walk that can also be done with the hotel’s free rental bikes.
Skating/Skateboarding
The Follonica seafront is great for your rollerblades! But if you want to show off with double axels you can always head to the nearby ice rink.
Tennis
If you don’t want to give your elbow a break, there is a double tennis court waiting for you! A few minutes by car and you are ready for your family tournaments.
Swimming
if your children want to learn to swim or improve their performance, at the grove there is the possibility of having a lifeguard instructor just for them! What better swimming pool than the calm waters in front of our beach? The shallow and sloping seabed are just some of the advantages of this natural pool with beneficial effects. Book early!
Dinghy trip
For those who just need to relax but don’t despise a tour of the beautiful islands, there is the possibility of renting a dinghy, with or without a guide on board. A boat license is not necessary and, why not, you could also visit the beloved Cala Violina without parking problems and without walking for a long time. Enjoy the taste of certain privileges and book your trip!
Archaeological sites
Ok, you love nature and the outdoors, but want to add something more. Here is the activity for you! A few kilometers from here there are numerous Etruscan archaeological sites, mines and mineral parks. Baratti, Populonia, Roselle, Gavorrano… you are spoiled for choice.
Gym
If you’re afraid of going home with a few extra pounds (because of our sweets) we’ll let you in on a secret: there’s a new park in the city center that has the equipment most loved by bodybuilders. With the excuse of a walk you could refresh the memory of your muscles and say goodbye to your sense of guilt. But you can also feel comfortable sunbathing on the beach!
For the little ones
Not to mention that most of these activities are also suitable for children, there are some attractions to note.

And for your wife?
It’s true, at the grove you can give her a romantic dinner, an enviable tan and the relaxation of those who don’t have to think about cooking and washing. But this is not enough, so remember that there are numerous shops in the center and at least one km of summer stalls along the seafront (from early July). And if you want to get her a special dress for the mid-August gala, there is always the Valdichiana outlet village. Eventually you connect to our Wi-Fi and order on zalando.
Furthermore, Follonica is surrounded by splendid villages, from the medieval villages of Gavorrano, Scarlino and Massa Marittima, to the seaside towns of San Vincenzo, Puntala and Castiglione della Pescaia, to the castle of Populonia: all destinations reachable in 15/30 minutes by car.
