Why stay in Follonica? Because you have everything you need to spend a special holiday. The recipe consists of clean sea (blue flag since 2000), pine forest, particularly mild and sunny climate, the comforts you also have at home, outdoor activities and a pinch of social life. Staying at the grove you must also add tranquility, atmosphere, good food and pampering. Here is the perfect mix to disconnect from everyday life.
But let’s see in particular what is in this city and in the nearby localities.
– Magma Museum, Central Park, Church of San Leopoldo
– 4 km of seafront promenade closed to traffic, cycle paths
– natural park of Montioni, Cala Violina and Sterpaia, Acqua Park
– Kilometers of equipped beaches (one of which is specifically for the disabled)
– over 150 restaurants, two open-air discos and numerous pubs
– many places of food and wine, natural and cultural interest within a few kilometres.
Piombino
The northern tip of the gulf of Follonica coincides with Piombino, which offers a pleasant city center, a theater full of exhibitions (Campiglia Marittima) and a quick embarkation for the island of Elba. Not far away, in Venturina there is a spa with an outdoor hot water pool and an underground wellness centre.
Gavorrano e Scarlino
Here too you take a leap into the past especially if you happen to be in the medieval village of Gavorrano during the demonstration of “The jump of the Contessa”, or the re-enactment of the sad story of Pia De’ Tolomei narrated by Dante Alighieri in his most famous work, the “Divine Comedy”. During this representation carried out on the second Sunday of August, the inhabitants of the town recall the era with parades in costume and flag-wavers. There is also a pleasant view from the main square.
Puntone
The Marina di Scarlino was born in the stretch of coast adjacent to the Follonica pine forest, a renovated port not far from the Tombolo beach. The Follonica cycle path joins this locality which is also the beginning of the beautiful path in the Mediterranean scrub along the coast that leads to the beach of Cala Violina and Cala Martina.
Castiglione della pescaia
Do not miss the castle of Castiglione della Pescaia, which dominates the new town at the foot of the hill with a truly spectacular view. The village is crossed by walkways to be discovered and contains numerous restaurants with a characteristic atmosphere. At the foot of the hill, a wide beach with a pine forest and a nautical port. The hamlet of Tirli is also appreciable, with its majestic holm oak and chestnut woods and is a popular destination for both cyclists and those with a sweet tooth for dishes based on wild boar.
Those who love nature will not be bored thanks to the presence of rich parks and beautiful beaches with pine trees. Among the most famous destinations we mention the Montioni Natural Park, the Val di Cornia Natural Park (Sterpaia Park) and the Cala Violina Natural Park.
